Objective To compare the effects of pure titanium and conventional ultrasonic scaler tips on titanium surface and evaluate the adhesion strength of hPDLCs on the titanium surface treated by the two different tips. Methods Total 60 smooth titanium discs were used in this research. The discs were randomly divided into five groups:control(C,n=12),10s with Ti tip(Ti10,n=12),30s with Ti tip(TilO,n=12),10s the conventional tip(Cv10,n=12),30s with conventional tip(Cv30,N=12).After the treatment according to the protocols, the morphology and roughness of discs were evaluated by scanning electron microscope(SEM)and profilometer separately. In order to test the biocompatibility of the treated titanium discs, human periodontal ligament cells(hPDLCs)were co-cultured with those discs for 12 hours, and the adhesion strength of hPDLCs on titanium discs was calculated with CCK8 method. Results SEM observed less morphology changes on Ti 10 group when compared with Cv10 group. And the profilometer results also showed that the roughness of titanium at Ti 10 group was significantly lower than Cv10 group(P<0.05).However,if the scaling time increased to 30 seconds, there were no statistical difference between Ti 30 and Cv30 groups. There were no significant difference among groups for the adhesion strength of hPDLCs after being treated by different scaler tips. Conclusion Pure titanium scaler tip induced less morphology and roughness changes on the titanium surface than conventional scaler tip in a shorter limited scaling time, and there were no significant differences for the adhesion strength of hPDLCs on the different treated titanium surfaces..
