Objective:The purpose of this study is to retrospectively evaluate the clinical effect of sinus floor elevation with absorbable collagen sponge. Methods:From December 2012 to December 2016,the operation and medical records of 18 patients undergoing sinus floor elevation with only collagen sponge at Shandong University Dental Hospital were included in this study. In these patients,a total of 21 implants were placed following sinus floor elevation through alveolar ridge approach.According to the implant success criteria proposed by Cochran in 2002:(a)absence of clinically detectable implant mobility,(b)absence of pain or any subjective sensation,(c)absence of recurrent peri-implant infection and(d)absence of continuous radiolucency around the implant;the clinical success rates were calculated, and the survival rate and clinical use were observed after 6 months after loading. The mesial and distal bone height of the implant were measured according to the CBCT data immediately and six months after the surgery.Clinical effect of maxillary sinus floor elevation using only absorbable collagen sponge was evaluated.SPSS software was used to analyze the data,P<0.05 was statistically different.Results:(1)Success rate:A total of 21implants in 18 patients were successful. No postoperative maxillary sinus membrane perforation, maxillary sinus infection or other clinical complications occurred. After uncovering the implants an average of 6 months after placement the 21 implants achieved a good osseointegration;the success rate was 100%.All the patients were satisfied with the final restorations. After 6 months, all the implant restorations well functioned, and we found no complications such as implant infection, maxillary sinus membrane perforation,infection.(2)Data measurement results:Residual bone height(RBH)was about(6.94 ± 2.27)mm.The mesial RBH was(6.96 ± 2.27)mm,and the distal was(6.09± 1.86)mm.There was a large difference between the mesial and distal RBH,up to 3.8 mm.After 6 months, the new bone formation of the implant was about 0.94-7.72 mm,mean(2.5 ± 1.59)mm;the mesial side was(2.57 ± 1.74)mm,and the distal was(2.58 ± 1.39)mm.There was no significant difference in the new bone formation between the mesial and distal sides. Conclusion:The posterior area of the maxilla often represents a challenging clinical situation because of either the lack of alveolar bone or the structural characteristics of the trabeculae in that specific area. This study suggests that the maxillary sinus floor augmentation with a collagen sponge can achieve good clinical effects with high success rate.It can effectively prevent the maxillary sinus membrane perforation, maxillary sinus infection and other clinical complications. In addition,it can effectively reduce the suffering of patients by simplifying the surgical process and reducing the risk of surgery. It can also reduce the economic burden of patients, and be easily accepted by patients.
