ObjectThe study was to explore the change of retention of two ball attachments in vitro after they were soaked in three different cleansing solutions by fatigue testing machine,in order to evaluate the effects of denture cleansing solutions on different retention of ball attachments and provide the clinical guidance for denture cleansing solutions applications.Material and methods1.In this study, four ball abutments, eight O-ring housings and twenty O-ring specimens of yellow and red O-ring were randomly divided into four groups:control group(soaked in tap water)?experiment group(soaked in Polident,Chlorhexidine and 0.5% sodium hypochlorite). The initial retention of each group was test by fatigue testing machine. The relations of retention and time had been studied during the dislocation of the ball attachment.2.Ball attachments O-rings were soaked in cleansing solutions in thermostat for a time simulating 12 months of clinical use.The retention was recorded for 1month,3month,6month,9month and 12 month.A universal testing machine was used to perform 1000 pulls(1000 cycles of insertion and removal)and retention was recorded.3.Data were imported and analyzed by SPSS19(? =0.05).Results1.The initial retention of red O-rings was higher than yellow O-rings.The retention of the ball attachments gradually increased with time and the highest point represented the retention of the ball attachments, then gradually decreased and disappeared2.There was significant difference in retention when red and yellow O-rings were soaked in 3 different cleansing solutions after 12 months(P>0.05).However,there was no significant difference in retention among groups(P<0.05).To investigate the effect of soaking time on the change of retention we found that the retention was changed obviously when soaked for 1 month(P<0.05).3.The attenuation rate of retention in the group of 0.5% sodium hypochlorite was the highest when soaked in denture cleansing solutions for 12 months. The attenuation rate of retention was still obvious after 1000 cycles of insertion and removal4.According to the curve of the retention of the ball attachment with the immersion time, the retention of the control group was not significantly decreased, while the retention of the experimental group decreased gradually with the increased of immersion time Conclusions1.The initial retention of the ball attachment was low,so the selection of the type and quantity of O-ring should be considered when using ball attachment; The denture cleansing solution has an significant influence on the retention of the ball attachment. In the group of 0.5% sodium hypochlorite solution, ball attachment retention falled faster than the other groups,so 0.5% sodium hypochlorite should not be recommended to clean ball attachment.2.The retention of ball attachment was reduced when soaked for 1 month,so short-term immersion had effect on the retention of the ball attachment.3.The retention of the ball attachment was significantly reduced in the experiment groups after 1000 cycles of insertion and removal, and there was significant difference between the control groups,so the denture cleaner has effect on the final retention force.
