Background:In order to study the role of axillo-femoral arterial bypass in the management of aorta-iliac occlusive disease.Investigations of the surgical indications, complications, technical characteristics and evaluation of the outcome of the AFB(Aorto-femoral Bypass)in the management of AIOD(Aorto iliac Occlusive Disease).Methods:Forty-five cases of aorta-iliac occlusive disease managed by axillo-femoralarterial bypass were randomly selected and retrospectively analyzed from the time between 1stOct 2005-30th April 2016.Occlusive diseases were found to be arteriosclerosis obliterans in 38 cases, thrombosis in 6 of the cases and dissection 1 case, respectively.Clinical features were claudication in 6,resting pain 12 and ulcer/gangrene 27 patients,respectively.Axillo-bifemoral bypass was performed in 26 and axillo-unifemoral bypass 19 cases, respectively. Results:Out of the 45 cases, the maximum age was 85 years and the minimum age was 36 years.Males 34(75.55%)and 11 Females(24.44%).Age,sex,smoking history, clinical manifestations and complications were deemed to me similar as those reported at home and abroad.4 cases of postoperative complications such as mild renal insufficiency and delayed wound healing were noted. There were no deaths in both axillo-uni-femoral and axillo-bi-femoral artery bypass surgery group.Hence the success rate was 100%.Postoperatively,symptoms were relieved in all cases, with resting pain disappeared and skin temperature improved.Cases were followed up for 3 months to 80 months.Tentative graft patency rates in the series were 93%,87%and 81%in 1 year,3 years and 5 years,respectively.Conclusion:Axillo-femoral arterial bypass has advantages over other procedures when taken into considerations like less invasive simple operation, small trauma, easy tolerance and effective curative effect hence proving to be one of the effective methods for the treatment of aorta-iliac occlusive diseases.
