Background The complex structure of human skin turns it into an special effective outermost defence line. Its barrier functions can protect the body against exogenous chemical and physical factors, and help maintain homeostasis of the human body. This role is played by the epidermal barrier,in which the corneal layer of epidermis has a particularly important function to prevent moisture loss and regulate the content of SC hydration. To quantitatively evaluated faciocervical skin physiological properties and image features and analyze their relationship,we can objectively evaluate the younger, aging speed and the sensitive level of the skin. Objective To quantitatively evaluated faciocervical skin physiological properties and image features with non-invasive measurement and analyze their relationship between gender and age. Methods 500 healthy volunteers in 6 age groups were enrolled in this study.A multifunctional skin physiology monitor(Courage & Khazaka electronic Gmb H,Germany)was used to measure skin sebum content, hydration,TEWL,erythema index, melanin index,in 4 different locations of the face(forehead, cheek, nose and neck).Facial pore size, porphyrin, wrinkle volume, roughness and UV spots were analysed by VISIA-CR in 450 healthy volunteers. Results The TEWL values were different in all age groups(p<0.05).The nose TEWL values were the highest and the neck were the lowest.Female TEWL values were significantly lower than male(p<0.05).The content of SC hydration was not consistent among different age groups in all tested location. And the trend that the SC hydration fell down with age increasing was significant(p<0.05).Male SC hydration was lower than female. Also, the SC hydration was not identical on different regions, from high to low in turn to the neck, forehead, nose, cheek. The sebum content was influenced by age and gender, with differences among all age groups(p < 0.05).The sebum content of the age 16~25 and 26~35 groups was significantly higher than other age groups.Male sebum content was higher than female with the same age groups(p < 0.05).The sebum content of the nose and forehead was higher than the cheek and neck(p < 0.05).Male skin melanin content was higher than female(p < 0.05),and it was identical in all age groups.Female melanin content increased with the age.The erythema content of face and neck was positively correlated with age(p < 0.05).Male erythema content was higher than female(p < 0.05).The p H value on skin surface of cheek was the highest, followed by the forehead, nose, neck.Male p H value was higher than female.Among all age group,p H value of 55~70age group was highest.Facial wrinkle volume, roughness and UV spots were positively correlated with age(p <0.05),and were significantly higher in males than in females in each age groups(p <0.05).Facial porphyrins score was also positively correlated with the pores size. There in a significant difference among various parameters. The p H value presents a positive correlation with the TEWL value on forehead, cheek and neck. The relationship between wrinkle volume and TEWL value was positive in female group on the forehead as well with UV spots and SC hydration. Conclusion Non-invasive technique can quantify the skin physiology in different gender and age.To monitor these parameters,we could well describe the skin features, guidance the skin care, assess the skin younger and provide effective treatment for some skin disease.
