Objective Cone beam CT has a beneficial effect on the diagnosis and treatment of Stomatology. However, due to the limitations of its imaging technique,it is possible to produce various artifacts on the image. The metal artifact in the oral is usual to see,and it is hard to measure the artifacts. In this study,we propose a method to quantitatively evaluate metal artifacts and compare the effects of two cone-beam CT modes on metal artifacts,in order to reduce the impact of metal artifacts on clinical diagnosis and treatment. Methods Marked the anterior region, premolar area, molar region on the plaster models.Placed 3.3mm diameter titanium cylinder into anterior region,4.1mm and 4.8mm diameter titanium cylinder into molar region.Placed one titanium cylinder in each model.Models were scanned by CBCT under the same external conditions and measured with Matlab software then analyzed the results. Two cone-beam CTs had the ring artifacts and scattering artifacts. Results Two kinds of cone beam CT images both can find the artifacts, and the original titanium column cross-section identification has been affected. The artifacts can be roughly divided into two kinds, one is around the high density of the titanium column cross section;the other is the radial artifacts, centered on solid artifacts, from near to far,the brightness gradually become low.The mean value of the artifact area of the pulsed radiation group was(1.16 ± 0.34)cm2,and the mean value of the artifact area of the continuous radiation group was(0.46 ± 0.11)cm2.The difference was considered statistically significant(P<0.05).Conclusions This showed that cone-beam CT would produce different artifacts if it has different internal exposure conditions.
