Purpose: Comparing the energy expenditure of normal weight people and overweight people during overground walking with same load and same speed combinations, studying the energy expenditure of these two groups during walking with the different load and the different speed, and exploring the characteristics of energy expenditure during overground walking with load of normal weight and overweight individuals,in order to provide a reference of guiding the weight control for overweight individuals. Methods: Male subjects were divided into overweight group(n=18)and normal weight group(n=25)according to BMI.The body composition of the subject was measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. The rest energy expenditure, the energy expenditure of overground walking without load and with load were measured by Cortex MetaMax 3B portable gas metabolic analyzer. The overground walking speeds were 4.0km/h,5.0km/h,6.0km/h.The load of overground walking included 0kg,1kg,2kg,3kg,4kg and 5kg.The form of load was backpack.Based on the oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide exhalation at each stage, the energy expenditures during overground walking without load or with load were calculated.Results:(1)When the speed was 4.0km/h without load,or load with 1kg,3kg,4kg,and the speed was 5.0km/h,load with 2kg,the energy expenditure, net energy expenditure of walking in overweight group were significantly higher than those of the normal weight group(P <0.05);(2)When the walking speed is constant, the oxygen uptake, energy expenditure, net energy expenditure, the heart rate, and RPE of walking in the overweight and normal weight groups did not rise significantly with the increase of load(P>0.05);(3)When the load is constant, oxygen uptake, energy expenditure, net energy expenditure, the heart rate, and RPE of walking in the overweight and the normal weight groups rose significantly with the increase of speed(P <0.01).Conclusions:(1)When the speeds are 4.0km/h and 5.0km/h with load, the energy expenditure and net energy expenditure of walking in overweight people are significantly higher than those of the normal weight people; When the speed of 6.0km/h with load, body weight is not related with energy expenditure.(2)When the speed is constant, the increase of load has not linear relationship with the increase of energy expenditure, net energy expenditure and heart rate.(3)When the load is constant, the energy expenditure, net energy expenditure, heart rate and RPE during walking rise significantly with the increase of speed. When walking, the speed has greater effect on energy expenditure than load.
