Objective The study was aimed to investigate the needs of caring behaviors perceived by elderly residents in nursing homes in Zhengzhou and explore its influencing factors and it was conducted by semi-structured interview to dig deeper into the caring needs and the related factors.In order to provide valuable reference for making the nursing care standards to the elderly residents in nursing homes of China as well as building the standardized training scheme of nursing staff.Methods This study used quantitative research combined with qualitative research method to explore the needs status and influence factors of caring behaviors perceived by elderly residents in nursing homes in Zhengzhou.It includes two parts: 1.A quantitative analysis of the needs and influence factors of caring behaviors perceived by elderly residents: A total of 366 elderly residents from 20 nursing homes were selected by random sampling method.The investigation was conducted with a demographic data questionnaire,Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire(SPMSQ),Barthel Index Scale(BI)and Elderly Residents-Perceived Caring Behaviors Inventory developed by Hu Huixiu and Wang Zhiwen etc in 2015.The needs status of caring behaviors perceived by elderly residents were investigated and the related factors were explored.2.A qualitative analysis of the needs and influence factors of caring behaviors perceived by elderly residents: The purposive sampling method was adopted,14 elderly residents in nursing homes were selected from the first part through the semi-structured interview,it aimed to dig deeper into the needs and influence factors of caring behaviors perceived by elderly residents.Results 1.The total score of caring behaviors needs was(110.99±10.09),the mean score was(3.96±0.36),the dimension score of meeting the emotion needs was the highest(4.39±0.61),the dimension score of giving confidence and hope demand was the lowest(3.56±0.58).2.The total score of caring behaviors needs as the dependent variable,factors of statistical significance in the single factor such as the elderly's educational level,occupation before retirement,number of live offspring,living pattern,monthly income,the type of medical insurance,ADL status,satisfaction of nursing service and length of residence as independent variables,classify the unordered set dummy variables and use stepwise multiple regression method to analyze the data.Multiple logistic regression showed that occupation before retirement,living pattern,the type of medical insurance,ADL,satisfaction of nursing service and length of residence were the major influential factors(P<0.05),which can explain 46.5% of the total variance.3.Qualitative research results showed that the needs of caring behaviors perceived by elderly residents included health service,livable environment and social interaction;its main influence factors were staff factors and their personal factors.Conclusion The elderly in nursing homes in Zhengzhou had high demand for caring behaviors and they were influenced by many factors.The nursing homes should consider the specific situation combined with influence factors of the elderly and do regular assessment,to provide safe,professional and individualized caring behaviors from different perspectives so as to meet their caring needs and improve their quality of life.
