Background:Irritable bowel syndrome(IBS)is a multifactorial and functional disorder, with complex but unclear etiology and pathophysiology. There may be link between allergic diseases and IBS,which was poorly understood. Our aim was to study the association between allergic diseases and the prevalence and characteristics of IBS.Methods:We reviewed 108 allergic patients from Allergists in the Second Affiliated hospital of Zhejiang University of Medicine from November 2016 to March 2017,including 49 allergic rhinitis(AR)patients and 59 chronic urticaria(CU)patients. We chose 71 controls from ward accompany.Comparison of the prevelance and related gastrointestinal symptoms of IBS between patients and controls was undertaken. We also analyzed possible factors on the effect. Results:The detection of IBS in CU patients had a trend of increase, compared with the controls(OR=4.644,P=0.078).The severity of pulpy level(P=0.026)and viscous(P=0.415)of feces in CU was significantly increased.Eosinophilic counts(P=0.005)and total immunoglobulin E(IgE)(P=0.030)was significantly increased in AR compared with controls, and house-dust-mite(HDM)specific IgE was higher in AR than CU(P<0.001).Total IgE was associated with the incidence(OR=3.379,P=0.030)and severity(P=0.036)of bloating in allergic patients.HDM specific IgE was independently associated with bloating(OR=3.640,P=0.016).Conclusions:CU patients have a trend of suffering IBS,usually with diarrhea.Intimate association between total IgE or HDM specific IgE and bloating is discovered. It indicates IgE-mediated immune reaction probably takes part in the effect of allergy on gastrointestinal symptoms.HDM specific IgE is an independent risk factor of bloating, which indicates the relation between the allergen and gastrointestinal symptoms.
