The Relationship Between Statin Therapy And Risk Of Incident Cataract:a Meta-analysis

Objective:So far,studies exploring the association between statin use and the incidence of cataract have been inconsistent and controversial.This study aimed to identify whether a relationship exists between statin therapy and incident cataract by conducting a meta-analysis of 6 randomized controlled trials on the association of statins with cataracts.Methods:Two investigators independently searched Pubmed,Embase,Cochrane and Web of Science for all reported Randomized controlled trials(RCTs)of statins conducted before March 2017,and record the data regarding interventions and the occurrence of cataract.This study enrolled 26534 patients,follow-up for at least 12 months.Meta-regression was used to identify the association between statin therapy and the risk of incident cataract.Results:Totally,6 trials with a total of 26534 non-cataract patients were included.15417 patient accept the statin therapy while 11117 patients assign to the placebo.6 studies compared the incidence of cataract between the experimental group and the control group during follow-up,and found there was no significant difference in cataract incidence between two groups(RR:0.93,95%CI:0.75-1.14,P=0.46).Due to differences in the selected population,after eliminating a multiple and multi-countries study,In the subgroup analysis stratified by population,statin can reduce the risk of the incident of cataract(RR=0.83;95%CI:0.71-0.98,P=0.03)in European and American population.There is no significant difference in the incidence of clinical cataract between both groups in the analysis of five studies(RR:0.94,95%CI:0.73-1.21,P=0.64).Conclusion:The results of this study indicate that in the general population,the use of statins does not affect the incidence of cataract.The effect of statins on the lens may be different in different populations,in the European and American population,the use of statins may reduce the incidence of cataracts.
