Purpose:To investigate the influence of overnight orthokeratology on ocular surface symptoms and signs in children.Methods:29 subjects with overnight orthokeratology were observed. The ocular surface disease index(OSDI),the height of meniscus, average noninvasive tear film breakup time(A-NIBUT),bulbar and limbus redness, corneal topography, corneal fluorescein staining, and the Schirmer I test were measured before and at 1week,1month,2 months and3 months after wearing the overnight orthokeratology. The statistical analysis was conducted with SPSS 22.0.Nonparametric tests were used to evaluate differences among all subjects. Results:Significant decrease in A-NIBUT was observed compared with baseline values at 2 months and 3 months(P<0.05).Significant increase in bulbar and limbus redness was observed compared with baseline values at 3 months(P<0.05).Significant increase in corneal staining scores was observed compared with baseline values at 1week,1month,2months and3 months(P<0.05).No significant changes were observed in OSDI,the height of meniscus and the Schirmer I test(P>0.05).Corneal curvature and corneal eccentricity(e value)showed significant decreases compared with baseline values at 1week,1month,2months and3 months(P<0.05).Conversely,significant increases in corneal index of surface variance(ISV)and corneal index of vertical asymmetry(IVA)were observed compared with baseline values at 1week,1month,2months and3 months(P<0.05).There was no correlation between the decrease in A-NITBUT and the variation in corneal curvature,e value,ISV and IVA during the follow-up study(P>0.05).The variation in corneal curvature,e value,ISV and IVA were larger in moderate myopia group than low myopia group(P<0.05).The variation in A-NIBUT,bulbar and limbus redness and corneal staining scores were no significant difference between the low and moderate myopia group.Conclusion:1.The overnight orthokeratology did not cause contact lens discomfort.2.The overnight orthokeratology did not influence the volume of lower meniscus and basal tear secretion, but decreased the tear film stability and increased corneal fluorescein staining scores.3.The variation of corneal morphology were larger in moderate myopia group than low myopia group, but did not increase the ocular surface damage.
