A Study Of Xin-gan Compatibility Theorem In Zhang Zhongjing’s Prescriptions And Its Influence On Later Generations

Objective: Based on the exploration of the application of Xin-gan Compatibility Theorem into Zhang Zhongjing’s Prescriptions,and how well the later generations make use of Xin-gan Compatibility Theorem and develop it,this thesis tries to make a comprehensive understanding of the position of Xin-gan Compatibility Theorem in Formulation Theory,and prospects its future in TCM clinical application.Methods: Literature induction and philosophical research methods are applied in this article.There into,the former method is mainly employed in historical evolution,Xin-gan Compatibility Theorem,principal classic theories,and the application of Xin-gan Compatibility Theorem into epidemic febrile disease as well;the generation-inhibition in five elements method is mostly utilized in the connotation of xin flavor and gan flavor,while the analogy research method utilized in Xin-gan Compatibility Theorem of Zhongjing’s Prescriptions.And lastly,a combination of literature induction and philosophical research methods is applied into Xin-gan Compatibility Theorem medical records,in the hopes of making a classification and analysis.Results: There are more than twenty Xin-gan Compatibility Theorems in Zhang Zhongjing’s prescription: the theorem of yang-Oriented Xin-Gan(reinforcing yang with pungent and sweet drugs),theorem of notifying yin and moistening dryness with pungent,cool and sweet-natured herbs,formulation of clearing heat with pungent and cool-natured herbs,formulation of clearing summer-heat with pungent,cool,sweet,and cold-natured herbs,formulation of dissipating cold with pungent and sweet natured herbs,method of dispelling pathogenic wind with pungent and sweet natured herbs,method of removing dampness with pungent and sweet natured herbs,formulation of dispersing blood stasis with pungent and sweet natured herbs,theorem of tonifying spleen with pungent and sweet natured herbs,theorem of tonifying heart with pungent and sweet natured herbs,theorem of nourishing liver with pungent and sweet natured herbs,theorem of nourishing kidneys with pungent and sweet natured herbs,theorem of regulating stomach for descending adverse qi with pungent and sweet natured herbs,theorem of tonifying blood with pungent and sweet natured herbs,formulation for nourishing qi and blood with pungent and sweet natured herbs,theorem of yang-invigorating and phlegm-resolving with pungent and sweet natured herbs,formulation of enriching blood and inducing diuresis with pungent and sweet-natured herbs,formulation of expelling pathogens from both interior and exterior with pungent and sweet-natured herbs.Ye Tianshi(1666-1675),a famous physician in the Qing dynasty,applied Xin-gan Compatibility to his doctrines like syndrome differentiation of diseases caused by six exogenous pathogenic factors,syndrome differentiation in accordance with the wei,qi,ying and blood systems,syndrome differentiation in accordance with the zang-fu organs,and syndrome differentiation in accordance with the Sanjiao theory.He developed this classic formulae,that is,the Xin-gan Compatibility Formulae a lot,which can be seen from his medical records.Another physician Wu Jutong(1758-1836)of the Qing dynasty,expounded the classic formulae in “diseases caused by six exogenous pathogenic factors” and “insidious pathogen warm disease”,and he also innovated a formulae utilized a lot by the later generations.Conclusion: The formulae of Xingan compatibility can be employed not only to cure diseases caused by wind,cold,summer-heat,wetness,dryness and fire,and diseases where the meridians locates,but also to treat some disorders caused by the deficiency of vital qi in zang-fu organs and to cure some diseases due to the malfunction of the vital energy,the blood,and the saliva.In Treatise on Febrile and Miscellaneous Diseases,the Xin-gan Compatibility Formulae serves as the fundamental principle for herbs in strengthening the vital and dispelling the evil,preserving stomach qi and saving body fluids,which plays a crucial role in the qi and flavor compatibility.Later medical scholars such as Li Dongyuan,Ye Tianshi and Wu Jutong,their having applied Xingan Compatibility a lot clinically,has enlightening significance on clinical prescriptions and also needs further research.
