Background and objectiveLiving with an untreated, unruptured intracranial aneurysm(UIA)can decrease their quality of life(QoL)and makes anxiety and depression for fearing of its rupture, even in the treated patients, because of worry about recurrence or recanalisation of the aneurysms. The objective of this study was to assess the symptoms of anxiety, depression and quality of life after surgery clipping and endovascular coiling of unruptured intracranial aneurysms,Provide the basis for treating or not when facing an intracranial unruptured aneurysm, and reference for selecting surgery clipping or endovascular coiling.Method296 living patients were included.64 had undergone surgery clipping,98 had undergone endovascular coiling, and 134 untreated within the last 5 years. We sent postal questionnaires included Self-Rating Anxiety Scale(SAS),Self-Rating Depression Scale(SDS)and Short Form-36(SF-36)to these patients. We use dvariance analysis and Student's t test to assess difference among the groups.Results198 questionnaires(66.9%)were returned.Comparing patients had undergone surgical clipping and endovascular coiling with those unteated,SF-36 in mental health domain has a significant improvement in all responders, and in the physical function, body pain and mental health domains when excluding those patients with neurological complications. There was no significant difference between anxiety and depression among the three groups. No significant difference in the SAS,SDS and SF-36 was find between the clipping and coiling groups in the all patients, while SF-36 in body pain domain was significant higher in the coiling group.Patients diagnosised 5 years ago with or without treatment got lower score of SAS and SDS,higher SF-36 score than those diagnosised 1 years ago.ConclusionsWith the UIA occlusion can improve the QoL,mainly in mental health, physical function and bodily pain domains, without substantially reduce levels of anxiety and depression.Complications may the important cause of leading to lower quality of life. The QoL of patients undergone edovasular coiling seems to be better than those of surgical clipping, with no difference in anexity or depression.Anxiety, depression and the decrease of QoL may be short-term complications of the UIA patients both treated and untreated.
