Objective The purpose of the present study was to compare clinical outcomes of medial unicompartmental knee arthroplasty(UKA) in patients with patellofemoral osteoarthritis(patellofemoral osteoarthritis PF OA) and those without PF OA and to evaluate the effect of PF OA on outcomes after UKA.Methods Selected all of the patients with unicompartmental knee osteoarthritis be undergone UKA between January 2012 to January 2014 in our hospital. Each of them took axial and lateral views when the knee flexed to approximately 30° at the time of preoperative. The radiological status of the patellofemoral joint were defined using the radiographic assessment of patellofemoral osteoarthritis. Record all of the patients at the time of preoperative and postoperative follow-up of knee joint and patellofemoral joint pain and function change, and the outcome were quantified by the Scoring of Patellofemoral Disorders and Oxford knee score respectively. Apply different statistical methods to analyze the relationship between PF OA and the curative effect of UKA.Results The results were significantly improved compared with pre-operation regardless of whether degeneration of the patellofemoral joint. There was no statistically significant difference in outcome between patients with evidence of degeneration in the medial patellofemoral joint and those without(p>0.05).Patients with both medial and lateral PF OA and those whose patellofemoral joint normal had a similar results in the scoring of knee joint, but they had a worse score postoperative 1 month,3 months,6 months and 1 year than those without in the scoring of patellofemoral joint(0.01<p<0.05). The severity of both medial and medial combined lateral PF OA were found to be unrelated to outcome in patients that 2 years after sur gery of medial UKA.Conclusions The medial PF OA has no effect on the outcome of UKA;the results that achieved from the data of who with both medial and lateral PF OA are not stable,so about such patients we should be caution when selecting operative patterns.
