Objective To investigate plasma levels of galectin-3 in patients with congestive heart failure and the relevance between galectin-3 and brain natriuretic peptide(BNP) and Ultrasonic parameters.Methods we collected 35,32,33 cases with congestive heart failure corresponding II III and IV level of the NYHA classification and selected 30 healthy cases as the control group.The galectin-3 levels were examined by quantitative ELISA method,the BNP levels and value of echocardiography of all cases were measured.we observed the correlation of galectin-3 with BNP,EF,FS,LVEDD,LAD.Results The Plasma levels of galectin-3 and BNP in patients with heart failure was significantly higher than the control group, and there was significantly different(P<0.05). As following heart function deterioration, galectin-3 and the BNP increases gradually. Except for the heart failure group within cardiac function grade III and IV, the difference between the groups have statistical significance(P <0.01). The differences of BNP between the groups were statistically significant(P <0.05). Heart failure group have been compared with control group:EF?FS?LVDD?LADD were statistically significant(P <0.05).Using Pearson correlation analysis, the plasma galectin-3 level was positively correlated with BNP?LVEDD?LADD(r = 0.337,0.44,0.387, P <0.01), and was negatively correlated with EF?FS(r =-0.423?-0.412, P <0.01).Conclusion:(1)Our results show that galectin-3 level in patients with congestive heart failure is higher than normal people and more higher with the decreasing cardiac function.(2) Galectin-3 level in patients with congestive heart failure is closely related to the severity of heart failure. Its level of galectin-3 could reflect the degree of refraction in left heart ventricle.(3) Its level of galectin-3 could estimate the severity of the patients with congestive heart failure to a certain extent.
