Objective : In order to formulate the related policy about obesity prevention and rationally allocate the medical resources, we will examine the prevalence and risk factors of overweight, general and abdominal obesity among adults in Gansu, China. Methods:We analyzed the data which were obtained from the diabetes epidemiology investigation in Gansu province from 2013 to 2014.And use The standards of the “Criteria of Weight for Adults” to diagnose overweight, general and abdominal obesity.SPSS version 19 was used for data statistical analyses. The prevalence rates were compared by chi-square,the risk factors were assessed by multivariate logistic regression analysis. The mean was compared by t-test.Results : The mean Body Mass Index(BMI) was 23.31±3.05 kg/m2 and the mean waist circumference(WC) was 83.55±9.64 cm, the BMI and WC increased with age. 32.2% of the sample was overweight, 34.5% was abdominal obesity and 6.8% was general obesity. Males had higher rates of overweight and abdominal obesity than females respectively(37.7% vs.27.8% and 35.5% vs. 33.7%). The statistically significant difference was not found in the general obesity between females and males(P=0.82). Family diabetes history(FHDM),meat consumption, alcohol consumption, old age, a sedentary lifestyle are the common risk factors of overweight, general and abdominal obesity; the Hui, Yugur, Dongxiang and Tibetan have higher risk to become abdominal obesity than the Han;as for the genders, female is the risk factor of abdominal obesity, male is the risk factor of overweight and general obesity.Conclude : the mean BMI was close to the diagnostic criteria of overweight. The prevalence of abdominal obesity was high, the number of overweight in the population was large, and the prevalence of general obesity might be further increased. The obesity in thepopulation was severe.Particularly the old-aged men and postmenopausal women. So the health education propaganda is necessary to prevent and control obesity, especially for the people who have a family history of diabetes, have a sedentary lifestyle and the minorities.
