Objectives Research on clinical characteristics and hearing recovery of sudden hearing loss, to analysis of relevant factors related with prognosis of sudden deafness, and provide a reference for Clinical research of sudden hearing loss. Methods In this retrospective study, a total of 168 patients(184 ears) diagnosed with SSNHL at the Fujian provincial hospitals from January 2012 to December 2015 retrospectively. All of the 168 cases have complete medical history data, which consisted of history of the present illness, general physical examination, pure tone audiometry, measurement of acoustic immittance, Some patients underwent brainstem evoked response audiometry, ENG examination, radiological examination(MRI and CT) and so on. Cases with inflammation in the middle or inner ear were excluded. The primary objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of the correlation factors(such as age, sex, which side of the ear, duration of hearing loss at presentation, degree of hearing loss, hearing loss curve type, associated tinnitus, vertigo, presence of various comorbid factors lijke diabetes or hypertension) on the prognosis of sudden deafness by means of X2 or Wilcoxon analysis. Results In this clinical data, the peak incidence is between 45 and 60 years, with about equal distribution between men and women, most of cases(90.48%) are unilateral, only 16 patients have bilateral involvement. Tinnitus was present in 75%(136cases) and Vertigo in 19.05%(32cases).By single factor analysis, the statistically significant factors: age, degree of hearing loss, hearing loss curve type, associated vertigo and bilateral or unilateral SSNHL. Multiariable Logistic regression results showed following three factors: associated vertigo and bilateral or unilateral SSNHL were related with prognosis. Conclusions The age less than 60 years, without vertigo, unilateral SSNHL appear to have better prognosis of hearing improvement. And patients with mild or moderate sensorineural hearing loss and low-frequency descending curves were receive better prognosis. Patients' s physiology characteristic can be different in different age period, and prognosis for hearing recovery is based on several factors, including associated vertigo or not, bilateral or unilateral SSNHL, degree of deafness, hearing loss curve type. Thus, patients presenting with SSNHL should undergo a workup to establish their diagnosis, and most importantly, to take their prognosis factors of deafness in condition, then obtain appropriate therapy, and elevate the cure rate.
