This study was carried out systematically to investigate the effects on chemical constituents,inorganic elements,efficacy and toxicity of Hangzhou white chrysanthemum and Flos lonicerae caused by sulfur-fumigated process,providing some scientific evidences for comprehensively evaluating the qualities of Hangzhou white chrysanthemum and Flos lonicerae.The results showed that the main chemical constituents had qualitative and quantitative changes with new chemical constituents appearence in Hangzhou white chrysanthemum and Flos lonicerae after sulfur-fumigated process by qualitative analyses of their HPLC fingerprints,HPLC-MS,GC-MS and GC×GC-TOF/MS and quantitative analyses of their HPLC chromatograms before and after sulfur-fumigated process.The results suggested that sulfur-fumigated process could result in the residues of sulfur,as well as the increased contents of some heavy metals,such as As,Pb,at the meantime,the contents changes of some trace elements by using ICP-AES analytical method to determine the harmful heavy metals and the main trace elements in Hangzhou white chrysanthemum and Flos lonicerae before and after sulfur-fumigated process.A rapid detection technology based on FT-IR spectroscopy for distinguishing the sulfur-fumigated Hangzhou white chrysanthemum and Flos lonicerae was established.The method was rapid,accurate,which provided a simple,fast,intuitive and effective detection method for the identification of sulfur-fumigated medicinal herbs.The results showed that the efficacies of sulfur-fumigated groups were increased compared to those of sun-dried ones by anti-inflammatory experiment of Hangzhou white chrysanthemum.In addition,the results indicated that the efficacies of sulfur-fumigated groups were decreased compared to those of sun-dried ones by antiviral experiment of Flos lonicerae through the in vivo and in vitro antibacterial and antiviral investigations.Through the experimental investigations of acute and chronic toxicities to sulfur-fumigated Hangzhou white chrysanthemum and Flos lonicerae,the results of acute toxicity showed that the toxicity of sulfur-fumigated Flos lonicerae was stronger than that of sun-dried one,and there were no obvious differences in toxicity between the sun-dried and sulfur-fumigated Hangzhou white chrysanthemum.The results of chronic toxicity of Hangzhou white chrysanthemum showed that the body weights of rats were of little differences between sulfur-fumigated and sun-dried groups.The results of blood routine showed that there were no significant changes of all indexes between sulfur-fumigated and sun-dried groups.The blood biochemical indexes showed that sulfur-fumigated Hangzhou white chrysanthemum might affect excretion,metabolism and the functions of liver and kidney.The results of histopathology of chronic toxicity showde that the toxicity to rats' kidneys with sulfur-fumigated Hangzhou white chrysanthemum might be reversible under given dosages.
