Objective:To evaluate the prevalence of sleep disorder breathing (SDB), its respiratory event pattern and treatment in patients with poliomyelitis.Methods:298 subjects (220 males,88 females, age 46.8±6.9y) were recruited from two community. 147 of them from the south part of China and 141 from the north part of China. All of them underwent questionnaires, blood routine test, spirometry, chest X-ray, arterial blood gas, and overnight oximetry studies.50 subjects who were at high risk of SDB (ODL4?5/h) from south China were selected to undergo polysomnography (PSG) and positive airway pressure treatment (PAP) if needed. Results:among them,36% subjects had ODI4?5 and 9% subjects had ODI4?15. The pearson correlation between ODI4 and body mass index (BMI) was 0.535 (P<0.01). Subjects with BMI>28Kg/m2 had a higher ODI4 index than those whose BMI<28Kg/m2 (17.20±17.95 versus 4.11±3.59, P<0.01). Hyperglycemia and hypercholesterolemia were found more common in the subjects whose ODI4?15 than those whose ODI4?15 (28% and 40% versus 12.5% and 21.8%, P<0.05).We analyzed subjects' PSG and found that apnea hypopnea index (AHI)was 25.60± 22.23/h. PAP treatment was an effective way to improve subiects" AHI from 39.86±22.82 to 4.10 ±4.02 (P<0.01)Conclusions:SDB has a high prevalence among patients with post polio syndrome(PPS), Hypopnea and obstructive apnea was the predominant respiratory event Nasal PAP is an effective treatment for SDB in patients with PPS.
