Objective:This paper aims to study the Effect of fasting plasma glucose (FPG) 5.3mmol/L on the development of abnormal glucose metabolism and cardia-cerebrovascular lesion.Method:Retrospective cohort study was adopted in the research with the target group including non-diabetic elder population aged 60 or over who have carried out annual health check-up in our hospital from May,1996 to May,2015. Based on the average level of FPG in the checkup 3 years ago as the baseline, the group was then divided into four small groups:(<5.3mmol/L), (?5.3-<5.6mmol/L), (?5.6-<6.1mmol/L), and (?6.1-<7.0mmol/L), in our follow-up observation and study of the glucose metabolic changes, complications and mortality until May,2015.Results:1.Among the total of 1064 cases of research objects including 980 males (92.1%)and 84 females (7.9%) with the initial 3-year average level of FPG (4.94±0.4) mmol/L,126 cases of new-onset diabetes mellitus (DM) and 144 cases of impaired glucose regulation (IGR) were discovered during the follow-up visit. With the rising blood glucose level, the occurrence of impaired FPG regulation and diabetes was gradually increasing with a statistically significant difference (P< 0.05). When FPG was> 5.3mmol/L, the risk of developing IGR (IGR risk=28.9%) was significantly higher than that when FPG was<5.3mmol/L (IGR risk=4.2%, RR=9.223, P<0.01), the danger of catching DM increased (RR=2.428, P=0.003). When FPG was? 5.6mmol/L, the risk of developing DM markedly augmented (RR=20.752, P<0.01); 2. FPG<5.3mmol/L was the protective factor for cardiovascular lesion. When FPG ?5.3mmol/L the danger of cerebrovascular lesion was increased eightfold (RR=9.511, 95%CI=5.349-16.911, p<0.01); 3. At the end of the follow-up visit, mortality risk increased 47%(RR=1.47,95%CI 1.09-1.98, p=0.0127) when FPG was ?5.3mmol/L than when FPG< 5.3mmol/L.Conclusion:When FPG is more than or equal to 5.3mmol/L,the risks of IGR complicated by cardia-cerebrovascular lesion and mortality in the elderly are increased, which provides important implications for attention to the elder people with FPG?5.3mmol/L.
