Objective: By detecting of the levels of serum sex hormone in patients with early lung cancer and benign pulmonary nodules,to discuss whether sex hormones can be used as potential markers for early diagnosis of lung cancer. While detect the conventional tumor markers in serum, such as CEA,comparing the sensitivities in the diagnosis of lung cancer with the sex hormones.Method: In this study,65 patients were divided into benign pulmonary nodules and lung cancer group. The benign nodules group include 23 patients, their ages were 54.46±12.95 years old.The lung cancer group include 42 patients, their ages were60.50±10.87 years old.The 65 patients include 35 males and 30 females. There were no significant differences among two groups about age and gender.According to the pathological types, patients with lung cancer are divided into squamous carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. We measured levels of serum CEA,CYFRA21-1,testosterone,estrogen and progesterone in benign nodules and lung cancer group by ELASA.We compared the differences of the levels of CEA,CYFRA21-1 between lung squamous carcinoma, adenocarcinoma patients by t-test.We contrasted the changes of levels of estrogen, testosterone and progesterone in benign nodules and lung cancer group by t-test.We analyzed the levels of testosterone, estrogen and progesterone, distinguishing gender and pathology. We analyzed the sensitivities of CEA,CYFRA21-1,testosterone,estrogen and progesterone for early detection of lung cancer, using ROC curve.Result:(1)The levels of serum CEA in squamous carcinoma and adenocarcinoma group were 2.46±1.65 ug/m L,6.11±15.48 ug/m L,difference between the two groups was no statistically significant(P > 0.05).Serum levels of CYFRA21-1 in the two groups were 5.00±5.96 ug/m L,3.22±3.19 ug/m L,there was no significant difference between the two groups(P > 0.05).(2)Serum levels of testosterone in benign nodules and lung cancer group were 2.48 ±2.18 ng/m L,1.49 ±1.55 ng/m L,there was no significant difference between the two groups(P > 0.05).Serum levels of estrogen in the two groups were 21.99±9.59 ng/L,21.30±27.39 ng/L,difference between the two groups was no statistically significant(P > 0.05).Serum levels of progesterone in the two groups were 0.39±0.41 ng/m L,0.22±0.13 ng/m L,there was no significant difference between the two groups(P > 0.05).(3)Serum levels of testosterone in male benign nodules and lung cancer group were 3.92±1.74 ng/m L,2.17±1.57 ng/m L.Serum levels of estrogen in the two groups were 25.96±8.66 ng/L,17.27±9.23 ng/L.Serum levels of progesterone in the two groups were 0.34±0.16 ng/m L,0.23±0.11 ng/m L.The differences of three sex hormones between the two groups were both statistically significant(P<0.05).But the differences of three sex hormones between female benign nodules and lung cancer group were neither statistically significant(P > 0.05).(4)In 42 lung cancer patients, serum levels of testosterone in squamous carcinoma and adenocarcinoma group were 2.09±1.52 ng/m L,1.21±1.51 ng/m L,difference between the two groups was no statistically significant(P > 0.05).Serum levels of estrogen in the two groups were 16.06±6.76ng/L,23.64±32.56ng/L,difference between the two groups was no statistically significant(P > 0.05).Serum levels of progesterone in the two groups were 0.21±0.12 ng/m L,0.23±0.14 ng/m L,there was no significant difference between the two groups(P > 0.05).(5)Serum levels of testosterone in male squamous carcinoma and adenocarcinoma group were 2.03±1.48 ng/m L,2.29±1.70 ng/m L.Serum levels of estrogen in the two groups were 16.09±7.08 ng/L,18.25±10.93 ng/L.Serum levels of progesterone in the two groups were 0.19±0.09 ng/m L,0.26±0.12 ng/m L.The differences of three sex hormones between the two groups were neither statistically significant(P > 0.05).(6)The sensitivity of serum testosterone, estrogen, progesterone was 81.8%,77.3%,81.8%,respectively.They were higher than the sensitivity of serum CEA(45.5%)and CYFRA21-1(40.9%)in early diagnosis of lung cancer. Conclusion: The levels of testosterone, estrogen and progesterone in serum were decreased in male patients with lung cancer.Serum testosterone, estrogen, progesterone have higher sensitivity than the CEA and CYFRA21-1,in early diagnosis of lung cancer. Therefore, measurement of sex hormones may have clinical potential in the early diagnosis of lung cancer in male patients.
