Objective: To investigate the epidemiological features of spinal fractures in elderly patients at Third Hospital of Hebei Medical University. Methods: The data regarding gender, age, injured segment and fracture type were analyzed of the 3,425 vertebral fractures in 2,443 elderly patients who had been treated between January 2008 and December 2012.We analyzed the data above to find out the general epidemiologic characteristics in recent 5 years. Results: A total of 3,425 spinal fractures of 2,443 elderly patients were collected, including 942 males(27.50%)and 2,483 females(72.50%),and the male to female ratio was 1: 2.64.The fractures predominated in an age range of 60 to 69 years(45.31%).By AO classification, there were 3,092 cases of type A(90.28%),287 cases of type B(8.38%),and 46 cases of type C(1.34%),without statistically significant difference in sex ratios(?2=3.969,P=0.137).In 91 cervical fractures(2.66%),51.05 was the most frequent segment(31.87%).In 3,334 thoracolumbar fractures(97.34%),there were 1,406 thoracic(42.17%)and 1,928 lumbar(57.83%)fractures.53.01(30.35%)was the most common thoracolumbar segment. In 3,225 thoracolumbar fractures with Denis-type classification, there were 2,396 cases of Type ?(74.29%),639 cases of Type?(19.81%),125 cases of Type ?(3.88%)and 65 cases of Type ?(2.02%),with no statistically significant difference in sex ratios(?2=2.665,P=0.446).Conclusion: There are more females than males in spinal fractures of elderly patients. Its peak age ranged from 60 to 69 years old.The most frequent fracture segment of cervical fracture was 51.05,and of thoracolumbar fracture was 53.01.In AO classification, the most fracture type was type A.Denis-type?was the most fracture type in thoracolumbar fractures.
