Objective: Analysis of Professor Zheng Rixin's academic thoughts and the inheritance of Professor Zheng Rixin's academic experience and treatment characteristics.Methods:(1) By combing Xin'an Zheng's Laryngology department of academic schools heritage context and RI Xin Zheng professor of educational background, investigate RI Xin Zheng Professor academic ideological origins. Analysis academic achievement of Professor RI Xin Zheng abductive.(2) to investigate academic experiences of Prof. Zheng in view of features in methods for scholarship and selected academic experiences.(3) to observe the clinical efficacy of Xin'an Biyuan prescription, a secret recipe in Zheng's family, in the treatment of 87 patients with rhinosinusitis. a total of 115 patients with rhinosinusitis were divided into treatment group(n = 87) and control group(n = 28). Patients in the treatment group received oral administration of Xin'an Biyuan prescription, while patients in the control group received oral administration of Huodan pills. The overall score of symptoms and clinical outcomes were observed and compared between the two groups after 14 days.Results:(1) Zheng's family has been practicing medicine through 16 generations for 500 years(Nanyuan Laryngology through 14 generations), and Zheng's Laryngology has been successfully passed down in each generation. The three main reasons for academic achievements of Prof. Zheng are college education with undergraduate education in TCM and master education in integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine, master-apprentice learning programs led by several celebrated physicians and TCM masters in China, and complete inheritance of academic essence of Zheng's Laryngology.(2) The three features in methodology for scholarship by Prof. Zheng are respect for classics, extension of knowledge base, and focus on the major. For the selected academic experiences, this paper introduces Prof. Zheng's understanding of academic experiences, and summaries the academic experiences of Prof. Zheng in aspects of new understanding of treating diseases, review of applying TCM prescriptions, and experiences in medication.(3) The overall scores of symptoms in both groups were significantly reduced after treatment(P <0.01). However, the treatment group had a significant greater decrease in the overall score of symptoms than the control group(P <0.01). Moreover, the treatment group had significantly superior treatment outcomes in syndrome of accumulated heat in lung meridian and syndrome of stagnated heat of gallbladder as well as a significantly better overall clinical outcome than the control group(P <0.01).Conclusions:(1) The three main reasons for academic achievements of Prof. First, respect for classics: this paper introduces different achievements of Prof. Zheng after he read classics in four different historical stages of his physician career by several examples. Second, extension of knowledge base: to reveal this feature in the method for scholarship by Prof. Zheng, this paper describes the large-span and multidisciplinary knowledge structure of Prof. Zheng by introducing how he collated, edited, and published TCM classics, how he performed intelligent data mining and set up the computer database for clinical essence of Xin'an medicine, how he figured out the TCM treatment of tinnitus without deafness using computer technology, how he inherited academic experiences from celebrated TCM physicians, and how he successfully developed novel TCM drugs. Third, focus on the major: this paper takes ear swelling, tinnitus, and ear vertigo as examples to confirm that Prof. Zheng is proficient in treating complicated diseases in this field and that he deeply understands the derivation, variation, and clinical treatment of special diseases. For the selected academic experiences, this paper introduces Prof. Zheng's understanding of academic experiences, and summaries the academic experiences of Prof. Zheng in aspects of new understanding of treating diseases, review of applying TCM prescriptions, and experiences in medication.New understanding of treating diseases: 1, recurrent aphtha. This paper illustrates the characteristics, evidence for syndrome differentiation, pulse taking for diagnosis, and treatment of recurrent aphtha, and takes the diagnosis of severe periglandular aphtha as an appended example. 2, ear swelling. This paper explains the mechanism of pseudo-sensorineural hearing loss in the late stage of acute ear swelling, and points out that the short increment sensitivity index test can distinguish cochlear deafness from pseudo-sensorineural hearing loss, which provides guidance for TCM therapies and prevents overtreatment. The whole-body therapies, including invigorating spleen for diuresis, clearing heat-toxicity, and taking constipation, anorexia, and sweating syndrome into account, cure many patients with B-type curve of acoustic impedance.Review of applying TCM prescriptions: 1, a novel application of yin-nourishing and lung-clearing decoction. Based on Chonglou Yuyao(Jade Key to the Secluded Chamber), yin-nourishing and lung-clearing decoction is used to treat diphtheria associated with dry nose and lip induced by deficiency of lung and kidney and dry qi epidemic; it is also used for pharyngitis with characteristic of dryness, rhinitis with characteristic of dryness, and syndrome of lung dryness due to yin deficiency. 2, Zizheng Dihuang decoction. Zheng's Laryngology excels in treating amygdalitis with Zizheng Dihuang decoction. This paper points out that the prescription can regulate both qi and blood, clear wind-phlegm, and prevent dryness from invading the nose. Moreover, this paper reveals the roles of bauhinia skin and mint, two key components of the prescription.Experiences in medication: this paper comes to the conclusion that the understanding of the properties and functions of TCM prescriptions goes a long way from discovery to development, and finally to perfectness in knowledge accumulation. In clinical medication, physicians should be well trained to be familiar with drug properties, read typical literature on materia medica throughout the TCM history, and understand the derivation, development, and variation of the efficacy of TCM. This paper takes three prescriptions, fineleaf Schizonepeta herb, Xiguashuang, and blackberry lily rhizome, as examples of explanation.Fineleaf Schizonepeta herb: Prof. Zheng reviewed medical literature throughout the TCM history, and found out that the history of treating sore throat with fineleaf Schizonepeta herb went from no use to initial use, then to required use and finally cautious use. This paper analyzes the reliability of the theory that proposes the cautious use of fineleaf Schizonepeta herb in the treatment of sore throat, and six influencing factors for the development of the theory. This paper also introduces the academic essence of the theory and instructions for use of fineleaf Schizonepeta herb in Zheng's Laryngology.Xiguashuang: this paper summaries the preparation methods for Xiguashuang in Zheng's Laryngology, and proposes the TCM pharmacological mechanism of Xiguashuang: the interaction between Xiguashuang and mucosa at the injury site induces a relatively high osmotic pressure outside the mucosa, which allows the liquid and inflammatory metabolites of inflammatory edema in the local tissue to be placed outside the mucosa. As a result, blood transportation at the injury site is improved due to the release of the pressure over blood vessel from edema, and inflammatory metabolites can be transported easily and rapidly via the blood vessel. After edema disappears, the smooth drainage recovers in the tonsillar crypt, which allows aerobes, anaerobes, and viruses to be efficiently expelled.Blackberry lily rhizome: The dose-effect relationship determines the clinical efficacy of TCM prescriptions. TCM overdose will induce side effects. By a review of ancient literature on materia medica, this paper investigates the dose of blackberry lily rhizome adopted by physicians throughout the history to confirm the clinical observation that blackberry lily rhizome overdose induces diarrhea.(3)Xin'an Biyuan prescription achieves satisfactory clinical outcomes in the treatment of rhinosinusitis with syndrome of stagnated heat of gallbladder or syndrome of accumulated heat in lung meridian.
