Closed system of nutrient solution is used in protected cultivation in China and all over the world.The present study is aiming to select the optimum supplying time of nutrient solution and suitable size of cultivation trough for tomato plants.In this experiment,the tomato plants(cv.Jia Xi Na)were cultivated in two different cultivation trough sizes(large and small)filled with inorganic material(perlite substrate)and exposed to five different times(1.0 hour as control,1.5,2.0,2.5,3.0and 3.5 hours)of nutrient solution in closed system.Plant growth index,physiological index,fruit yield,fruit quality,water use efficiency,root distribution were evaluated.The results can be summarized as follows:1.With increasing exposed times of nutrient solution,fruit yield,plant biomass,volume of supplying nutrient,water content of perlite were increased.There are no significant difference when times of nutrient solution is more then 2h,but the quality of fruit and root activity were declined.On the other hand,water use efficiency(WUE)as fruit yield to supplied water was 12.83% less compared to control treatment.The moderate exposed time treatment(2.5 h)resulted in the highest WUE(5.11%)compared to control treatment.On the opposite,the short time of supplying nutrient solution is good for root activity.So,we can't recommend using neither short nor long exposed times of nutrient solution.It can be recommended to use moderate exposed time treatment(2.0 h)of nutrients supply for tomatoes.2.The larger size of cultivation trough increased plant height,fruit yield,root activity and plant biomass,but water use efficiency was decreased.The small volume of cultivation trough increased root restriction of tomato plants.Nonwoven was used for studying the effect of root restriction to the tomato.Root restriction increased the plant height,stems,yield of fruit,root activity water use efficiency and the biomass of plant.Root of tomato was mainly restricted above the nonwoven in the treatment of root restriction.It can be recommended to use the larger volume of cultivation trough for tomato nutrient supply.
