Canine external otitis is a disease which with high incidence, complicated etiology, and easy to relapse. As the dog population increased gradually, the disease brings more and more problems and economic burden to pet owners. In this paper, according to different causes, canine external otitis can be divided into four categories: parasitic external otitis, microbial external otitis, immune-related external otitis and structural disease of external ear. Relevant researches are done only in Beijing, Henan and some other places in China, there is no such report in Shenzhen. The etiology investigation of canine external otitis was conducted and 150 clinical cases were diagnosed and treated in present study, with respect to provide scientific basis for clinical diagnosis and treatment of pet dogs.Firstly, 598 case files of canine external otitis which collected from three pet hospitals in Shenzhen from Dec. 2014 to Dec. 2015 were investigated, relative information was recorded and the incidence regularity of all types of this disease was statistically analyzed. The results showed that parasitic external otitis accounted for 19%, microbial external otitis accounted for 56%, immune-related external otitis accounted for 20% and structural disease of external ear accounted for 5%. The peak of the disease appeared from Apr. to Sept. And the breeds of the canine external otitis were mini Poodle, Bichon, Pekingese and Golden retriever.Secondly, 150 clinic cases which collected from a veterinary hospital were classified by common parasitological and microbiological examination, allergen detection, tissue biopsy combined with clinical examination. Finally, practical and effective treatment options have been taken, all types of external ear disease have been treated effectively. Diagnostic results show that the parasitic external otitis was caused mainly by ear mites, the main pathogenic bacteria of microbial external otitis were Staphylococcus sp. and Malassezia sp., the main cause of allergic external otitis was the microbe allergen, the main cause of structural external otitis was the ear hematoma. The treatment results show that, the external otitis which caused by single parasitic infection can be completely cured, the cure rate of the external otitis which caused by simple microbial infection and mixed infection of microorganism and parasite reached more than 90%. The cure rate of structural disease of external ear was 89%. However, the treatment of the disease caused by microbial infection and allergy was difficult, their cure rate was only 58%.The results indicated that the accurate diagnosis and rational treatment can effectively treat dogs with canine external otitis, shorten the treatment period and minimize the treatment costs. The present study has laid a solid foundation for the diagnosis and treatment of canine otitis.
