Erythrophleum fordii Oliv. is a rare and endangered plants of secondary-level key protection, which is suitable for growing in tropical and south subtropical zone. The effects of seedling substrate, container size and application quantity of Phosphate Fertilizer on seedling quality through selecting preferred variety of Erythrophleum fordii Oliv. were studied. Randomized block design is used to research, Based on the determination of seedling height, caliper, biomass as well as morphological indexes and analysis of Photosynthesis parameters, the best suitable container size, growing medium and application quantity of Phosphate Fertilizer were determined. The main research is as follows:1. Five kinds of growing media, including A1,A2,A3,A4,A5 were used for growing seedling to compare their effect on seedling quality. It was found that formula A1,A2,A3 were the best media for growing seedlings, followed by formula A4 and A5.2. Small containers (12cm X 15cm) and big containers (15cm X 20cm) had no significant differences on seedling height and caliper in conditions of formula A1-A2 and A3. But that two kinds of containers had significant differences on seedling height and caliper in conditions of A5.3. In conditions of all kinds of cultivation medium, the ratio of height to diameter of seedlings in small container size B1 (12cm X 15cm) was significantly higher than large container size B2 (15cm X 20cm) (P<0.05), it showed that seedlings of Erythrophleum fordii Oliv. are of good quality in big container size.4. Seedlings of Erythrophleum fordii Oliv. with medium formula A3 had the largest ratio of height to diameter and a little poor quality among the media A1, A2 and A3. The ideal combination of matrix formula A2(pine bark 50%+loam 30%+the topsoil of Erythrophleum fordii Oliv forest 20%) and big container size B2 (15cm X 20cm) is based on the situation of seedling growth and its quality.5.The seedlings which is applied 100mg P2O5 had no significant difference on seedling height and caliper compared with control group. But the seedling of height and caliper were inhibited with the increase of application quantity of Phosphate. It is illuminated that the application of Phosphate Fertilizer had no significant promotion effect in growth in the prior period, but excessive application of fertilizer will inhibit the growth of seedling height and caliper.6.Application of 100mg-200mg Phosphate Fertilizer had no significant effect on the ratio of height to diameter in the prior period, and it made a slight decrease in the later period. Especially a high level of application (600mg) dropped significantly.7.With the increase of the amount of fertilization, seedling biomass exhibited a reduced tendency. Under the high level application of Phosphate Fertilizer, the underground biomass of the seedling is much more larger relative to the aboveground parts. However, analysis of variance showed that there is no significant effect on the biomass of each part of the seedling such as roots, stems, leaves, ground parts, gross weight and root-shoot ratio in conditions of different index.8. With the increase of fertilizer rate, the seedling quality index of Erythrophleum fordii Oliv. showed a reduced trend. But analysis of variance indicated that different index application of Phosphate Fertilizer had no significant difference in the seedling quality index (P>0.05)9.Different application quantities of Phosphate Fertilizer had a highly significant effect on the net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, CO2 intercellular concentration, transpiration rate and water use efficiency of the Erythrophleum fordii Oliv. And the index which had the maximum when 100mg Phosphate Fertilizer was applied. It founds that a spot of Phosphate Fertilizer could contribute to the photosynthesis of the seedlings.
