Technical Logic And Form Of Wood Joints

Joints reflect the mechanics of form evolvement;focusing on joints of traditional Chinese wooden architecture,this paper builds the relationship between architecture and structure,technology and form in an architectural perspective.This paper summarizes the common structural forms of Chinese traditional wooden architecture,and categorizes some wooden frames according to organizational order of holistic structure and detailed joint form;through case studies,this paper interprets structural meaning of form of joints,and analyzes structural logic of joints as integral parts in holistic structure;at last this paper discusses the form of joints based on a technical strategy.This article dissects technical logic behind the form of joints,including connection between structural order and joints form of Diantang Structure in early stage and in Ming and Qing Dynasty,together with the Yueliang joints,the Dougou joints and the Dieliang Structure.This paper can help architects understand technical causes behind mechanics of form,thus potentially inspire contemporary architecture design.
