The construction of soft landscape in low density residential areas is already very mature in developed European and American countries. In most cases, the space structure is based on natural terrain and original vegetation;the priority is placed on landscape in terms of the relationship between soft landscape and structures,as well as between soft landscape and people;there are often regional and cultural characteristics in space construction.People working in this area inside China should refer to their priorities on ecological environment protection, architectural style integration, and design procedures in space structure.Typical theories, such as Olmsted, lay much emphasis on protecting natural landscape and respect existed condition by avoiding regulated planting and choosing local tree species. The space structure of soft landscape in low density residential areas was called“villa” in ancient times and has become “villa and garden” in modern times. The past way of direct copy has gradually been replaced by modern method of original creation. In this study,we have discussed the current condition of soft landscape in Beijing low density residential areas through analyzing the space structure of several typical cases. We have had a detailed look at the reasonability and ecological features of the space structure, with the aim to summarize the principles in soft landscape construction: “principle of art”,“principle of diversity”,“principle of ecology” and“principle of economy by planting right tree species at right places”.These goal of these principles is to reduce investment, provide better view, and arrange the plants based on ecological community with distinct regional features. Also,we have explored the biodiversity and artistic style of plant arrangement in Beijing low density residential areas.
