Since the Reform and Opening-up,because of Chinese urbanization development and new rural construction, rural areas are facing the situation of "village sameness" and cultural decline.Traditional villages are gradually disappearing, the protection of cultural space is increasingly urgent. In this paper, based on the interpretation of anthropology of Geertz Clifford,I explore the new approach and methods of cultural space design which accord with the development of modern society.UNESCO definite the cultural space as the indispensable part of intangible cultural heritage and people’s daily life in 1998,cultural space has gradually become the most important part of intangible cultural heritage protection and urban research. This paper argues that cultural space should not be limited to the scope of intangible cultural heritage,it should be starting from the more general category, all rural or urban historical heritage, with the value of protection and inheritance of the human activities occur in the cultural space.Scholars have studied the concept, connotation, elements, value assessment and protection strategies of cultural space from several fields, such as the architecture, sociology, geography, and so on.However, most of these studies are based on the view of researchers, they pay attention to results by statically observation, they can’t truly reflect cultural holders’ understanding of cultural space. We use the interpretative anthropology theory, study cultural space based on the meaning system of “cultural activity-cultural space”,emphasize on understanding the function and meaning from the view of the culture holders, and then we interpret and present cultural space by deep description. We propose ways and methods of the new cultural space to adapt to the new culture, through the understanding of the changing rule of contemporary rural cultural activities.
