One of the most basic parameters of tyre was the load characteristic,which effected greatly on a variety of operated performance for wheel,including rolling resistance,energy loss and vibration characteristic.In this paper,the main research contents were consisted of the relationship between load and deflection,the influence of inner and outer factors on this relationship.There were the extreme differences between the novel Mechanical Elastic Wheel(ME-Wheel)and pneumatic tyre.Therefore,it would study load characteristic of ME-Wheel that fitted in well with its particularities,the methods of simulation and experiment were applied to investgate.In this paper,the 12-set-hinge ME-Wheel was used as research object.Firstly,the structure and working principle of ME-Wheel were analyzed respectively,and the mechanical analysis of load and driving characteristics for the wheel were carried out.It was found that when the location of hinge set change from top vertical axis to horizontal axis,the force on hinge set decreases progressively in cosine way,the axial force and bending moment increases progressively in sine way,through analyzing the mechanical property of major loading parts.The mechanical mode of wheel was optimized as well.Secondly,ME-Wheel finite element model was established based on the finite element theory,and load characteristic of ME-Wheel in static load condition was simulated analysis.Comparing the results of wheel’s load characteristic between simulation and experiment,it can be seen that: two curves displayed a satisfied consistence with each other,and the maximum error controlled in 5%,except the error caused by friction under light load and the deflection of rigid axle with heavy load.That means the ME-Wheel model was accurate and reliable.Thirdly,the influences of structure parameters,yawing force and rolling angle on ME-Wheel’s load characteristic were analyzed.It can found that: at the same load,there was a negative correlation between wheel deflection and the quantity of hinge set,positive correlation between deflection and the length of hinge set,negative correlation between deflection and the section area of elastic ring,positive correlation between deflection and the yawing force as well as rolling angel.Finally,main failure form for ME-Wheel was analyzed,a new quantitative failure load characteristic conception and description curve were put forward,and they were applied to failure condition.Then the effects of different failure structure on ME-Wheel’s load characteristic were studied.The results showed that: when failure hinge sets lied closer or over horizontal axis,the deflection of ME-Wheel was larger,and it became smaller when the failure hinge set location move toward to contact patch at the same loading.
