In recent years, the ice in arctic is melting with global warming. The economic value of the arctic channel is increasing, more and more countries plan to exploit the natural resources in arctic. The market demand of the arctic equipment will be increasing. The mechanical properties of the ice are the foundation of the design and manufacture of the arctic equipment. This paper presents a numerical method to research the mechanical properties of the ice and the icebreaking performance of ice breakers.First, the type of the ice and its structure is presented and then mechanical properties of the ice are presented.Second, this paper presents the finite element software Abaqus and the user defined material subroutine(UMAT).Then the semi-finite beam is used to stimulate the sea ice sheet. The bending failure of the ice beam is studied with theoretical method and numerical method. In the numerical studies presented herein, two three-dimensional constitutive model for ice is adopted and the icebreaking performance is researched.
