With the surge of automobile marketing and ownership, energy and nature environment will be tested.Energy saving and environmental protection will be an issue which must be solved.Lightweight of automobile is a key of saving energy and reducing emission. So lightweight of automobile is a eternal theme of car structure.CFRP technology, which started in aerospace field,is using in civil field widely. It must be more popular in the future. It may be a trend of using CFRP in car structure instead of steel. But because of the cost of CFRP,the CFRP products may lack competiveness in marketing and the characteristic of anisotropy will bring much difficulty in designing. This paper is aimed at using CFRP to make or reinforce B-pillar instead of steel.Quantify the promotion of using CFRP instead of steel, and compare the difference of use it in different places.Firstly, introduce the theory of FRP mechanics and adhesive connection.Describe the characteristic of FRP with a simple mathematical model. This will be useful in composite material structure design.Secondly, analyze the limited force of B-pillar,including vehicle vertical dynamics and statics, longitudinal force and transverse force.Summarize the force requirement of B-pillar.At last, simulate the different B-pillar schemes in different working conditions with FEM.The different schemes are steel B-pillar,CFRP B-pillar,CFRP reinforced outer plate B-pillar and CFRP reinforced inner plate. The different working conditions are tension, cantilever bending and clamped-clamped bending.Compare the results and find the differences in lightweight of different schemes. Finally, the results indicate that the CFRP Bpillar can lighten more than 50% than the steel B-pillar.According to comparing the unit mass performance, reinforcing the outer plate with CFRP is more effective than that in the inner plate.
