The Applicationof Wuhan’s Characteristic Cultural Elementsinthe Landscape Designof Roof Garden

With the fast urban development in recent decades,the urban pollution has emerged as a serious problem.It has also deprived the city of the regional characteristics.Relevant researches find that the urban green space system can address the issue of urban pollution.Moreover,the urban landscape can reflect the regional characteristics of the city.However,due to the shortage of urban land,many areas which have been seriously polluted are also faced with the shortage of land resource.The development of a large green land involves an overly high cost.Under this background,this paper is devoted to the design of roof garden.After surveying the development status of roof garden in Wuhan,this paper has found some problems,such as the incomplete policies and regulations,underdeveloped industry and the citizens’ limited understanding of roof garden.The landscape design of roof garden in Wuhan is also faced with some problems,such as the inadequate utilization of local cultural elements and the lack of urban characteristics.The objective of this paper is to explore the common methods of designing urban roof gardens.It will also make an attempt to solve the problem of introducing the roof garden to Wuhan.After solving this problem,this paper will go further to add regional elements to the design of roof garden and diversify the urban landscape.The main research method of this paper is referring to extensive literatures and summarizing the theories relevant to the design of roof garden.The case analysis has been also conducted.A field survey of the roof garden in Wuhan has been carried out to summarize its advantages and analyze its disadvantages.First of all,this paper has elaborated on the research background.The research objective of this paper has been extracted from the research topics which were neglected by the previous researchers.The research topic of this paper is the design of roof garden in Wuhan.In the second chapter,the researches of roof garden have been reviewed.This chapter has also discussed the concepts,history,classification and value of roof garden.The third chapter has discussed the current status of the research on roof garden both at home and abroad,including the popular research topics in the world as well as the development status and brief analysis on the cases of roof garden in Chinese cities,namely Shanghai,Hangzhou and Guangzhou.In the fourth chapter,some common methods of designing roof garden have been put forward.Some technical problems,such as bearing load and drainage design,have been analyzed.Some aesthetic factors,such as the matching of landscape elements and field design,have been taken into consideration.Based on the climate characteristics and regional characteristics of Wuhan,the fifth chapter has analyzed the case of regional landscape from the perspective of geographical division of three places in Wuhan.Some landscape elements which can represent the regional characteristics of Wuhan and some plants which can grow in Wuhan and reflect the characteristics of Wuhan have been extracted.How to applythem to the design of roof garden has been also analyzed.Two cases of roof garden in Wuhan have been chosen by the author.They are Wuhan Chutian City Roof Garden and the Roof Garden of Consulate General of France in Wuhan.Their design techniques and features have been discussed.The fifth chapter has also analyzed how the two cases can reflect the urban characteristics of Wuhan.The research achievements of this paper are as follows.Firstly,after researching extensive literatures,this paper has summarized some common methods of designing the roof garden.Secondly,the regional characteristics of Wuhan have been analyzed and summarized,based on which the discussion of how to integrate the local culture of Wuhan into the design of roof garden has been made.It is concluded that the macro-development of roof garden in Wuhan should require the policy support.In order to reflect the regional characteristics of Wuhan through the design of roof garden,those designers must fully understand the local culture and make the creative design accordingly.
