| Under the rapid economic growth and urbanization in China,its cities are faced with a wide variety of problems,including the need to redevelop the so-called “urban villages”,a unique phenomenon directly related to China’s distinctive dual land ownership systems.These “urban villages” are caused by factors not similar to those underlying squatter settlements in other developing countries.Because of the distinct causes,peculiarities and problems of “urban villages” in China,the redevelopment of the “urban villages” becomes a hot topic in urban planning field.And the central governmental “Balance Urban and Rural Development” policy provides agood opportunity for redevelopment of “urban villages” both in practice and research,since the 16 th national people’s congress of communist party of china was held in 2002.Scholars and think-tanks affiliated to governments enforced lots of research efforts in “urban villages” in recent years while a large number of plan and research related to “urban villages” has been put into practice.The literature is enriched by redevelopment mode research,analysis of practices at metropolitan level but is lack of research talking about redevelopment mode at county level.The target city of our study is Fuyang,a county affiliated to Hangzhou,in Zhejiang Province.The perspective of proceeding the study focuses on redevelopment mode of “urban villages”.Firstly,the study probes into investigation of typical urban villages in Fuchunneighborhood,Fuyang county,and corresponding literature review both domestically and abroad.Then the paper summarizes causes,current situation,and problems of “urban villages” in China and does cases studies of “urban villages”in metropolitan areas.Futhermoere,the paper turns to redevelopment modes of “urban villages” which are categorized into three types: Village-to-apartment redevelopment,sustainable renovation and relocating alternative places.In order to identify the analysis,the study takes Dongshan Village and Huteng Village as examples to identify the results in previous part of the paper.At last,suggestions are proposed in detail,which are useful and insightful for other “urban villages”.In general,the study tries to examine the redevelopment modes of “urban villages” at county level closely,which might provide some insightful inspirations and experiences for other villages around the county.Serious research on this topic will promote the practices of redevelopment of “urban villages” significantly,and sustainably,which thus propels the balance of urban and rural development in the long run. |
