Research On Urban Square Design Strategies Based On NCL Quality Eveluation System

Urban public square always plays an essential role during urbanism progress.High quality urban square is not only spot for daily exercises,but also important factors showing townscape and characteristics of cities.This paper start ed with the quality eveluation system for public space with three dimensions,safety,comfort and enjoyment.This system is used as the basic framework of the research which was proposed by Denmark architect Jan Gehl in his book new city life.This research takes popular public squares in Montreal,Toronto in Canada,Copenhagen in Denmark and other Northern European cities as cases study,combining with existing theories,and defines compulsory factors and design strategies for successful urban squares in cold regions.This research aims to provide comfortable and attractive outdoor public space,satisfy citizens' demands of winter outdoor activities,enrich winter townscape in cold regions and express unique characteristics and charm of winter.In this paper,the research content is divided into three parts.The first part mainly illustrates the background,aims,relevant researches,research framework and contents to give a first impression of this research.Chapter 2 mainly introduce foundamental theories for further study and research.First,the quality evaluation system for public space is introduced in the beginning to i llustrate the framework of the NCL public space evaluation system together with its influence,d efining the features and relevant influence of winter cities and illustrating the essential contents of square design in cold regions.In Chapter 3,the results and analysis of questinnaires are combined with the features of excellent cases to define feasible design strategies for public square in cold regions..The last chapter proposed public square design strategies which are feasible in cold regions to improve users' urban space experience from the security,comfort and expereience quality in NCL public space quality evaluation system.Squares are intended to provide citizens space for social life,exercise and relaxation and essential carries to show townscapes of cities.This research aims to provide new ideas for researches focused on square design and quality evaluation in cold regions.The combination of theories and project design could provide high quality attractive urban space experience for citizens.
