Multi-source Data Based Space Structure Analysis Of Guangzhou Central Urban Districts

During the process of urbanization in China,the excessive concentration of spatial elements in megalopolis has led to a series of negative impacts,including traffic congestion and imbalance of development among areas,which have caused inefficiency of cities.Since the idea of polycentrism first proposed in western countries,scholars have conducted massive theoretical and empirical researches in relation to this spatial strategy.A view generally held by the scholars is that the polycentric space structure of cities could help to relief the defects caused by monocentrism.However,for years there has been controversies over the definition and method of measurement of polycentricity in academia.It has been difficult to reach an agreement on the choice of morphological method and functional method,which made a bottleneck for polycentricity as a tool of spatial research.A significant condition precedent to realization of polycentrism is to ascertain the effectiveness of measurement of polycentricity.This dissertation has reviewed the results of researches in the past regarding polycentrism,and presented a method of measurement based on multi-sourced data.This method has been intended to combine the above two methodology of measurement and such that,to identify and measure the structure of space more effectively and hopefully,more accurately.The object of empirical research as shown in this dissertation is the central urban districts of Guangzhou city.The research has utilized multi-sourced data and the models of quantified analysis to identify the pattern of distribution and organization of the space centers under different index of measurement and,further,analyze the spacial structure of the object by both of theoretical deduction and data analysis.After conducting morphological and functional method separately,the results are combined in order to reveal the polycentric structure under measurement of manifold index set.The spatial structure in the central urban districts shows polycentric character under all chosen indexes,and topological structure of space centers also show polycentirc structures to some extent.This spatial structure is formulated jointly by the effect of geography and history,the comprehensive strategy of spatial development of Guangzhou and the supply of transportation service.
