As digital, wireless network, and video technologies get further integration and development, wireless video microscope is receiving growing attention.Wireless video microscopes possess the characteristics of digital video collection, portability, and wireless transmission. Most notable of all is the adoption of wireless network technologies and its application on video microscopes. The microscope video images transmit through wireless network, thus freeing itself from the traditional reliance on the cables. There is a great outlook for the application of wireless video microscope in product testing, collectables identification, medical testing, criminal identification, medical testing, digital teaching, biology research and so on.This article discusses the design and implementation of an embedded wireless video microscope system, which collects and transmits video image data through embedded Linux technology, while at the same time developing applications under the Windows operating system to receive and display video images. These applications can also photograph, videotape, and measure the video images. The understanding of this system can be acquired from two aspects as following:In terms of the hardware, this system utilizes a combination of digital video camera and CMOS images sensor. The video-processing chip used is the EM27585 which coordinates with the UVC agreement;the image sensor utilizes the HM1375 chip with the CMOS port of resolution of 1.3 million pixels;the wireless routers utilizes the AR9331 processor, which follows the 802.11b/g/n agreement and the main frequency of which can reach 400MHz;the camera lens is detachable: it can connect to the standard C/CS port optical lens in order to adapt to the needs in different contexts.Hence, the system is portable,power-efficient,and capable of long-distance transmission. It can efficiently complete the video image data collection and wireless transmission. On the software's side, the design of the wireless video microscope's collecting end is based on the Open Wrt routing operating system with the Linux kernel, realizing the functions of video image data collection, video segmentation, wireless transmission of videos and so on.The functions including real-time switches of video images' resolution and adjustments of white balance are added to the video image data collection. In the meantime, guarding process is added to the collecting end in order to prevent abnormal exit of the video collecting application. The design and development of the wireless video microscope's receiving end are based on the Windows operating system, making it possible to receive and display video wirelessly, capture images, record video, and measure the lengths and angles of the samples. In order to make sure the real-time display of the video images,frame-loss strategy has been adopted during the reception of the video.Various functions of software are also designed to meet the requirements for the video microscope in different scenarios. The wireless video microscope discussed in this article is extendable as well. The system can be upgraded according to new requirements. In the end,the testing and analyzing of the function and performance of the wireless video microscope have been taken, verifying each function of the system one by one in accordance with the testing samples.According to the testing result, each module of this system works normally, meeting the requirements of the wireless video microscope users. It also enables functions including video image data collection, wireless transmission, images measurement and so on,gaining itself features such as simplicity, portability, long standby time, and wide-range application.
