China is a mountainous country, especially in the southwest regions. When carrying on the engineering construction such as highway in mountain area, it is inevitable to excavate the rock and soil mass. As a consequence, a large number of slope stability problems appeared. Coal strata are distributed in Guizhou Province widely which varies greatly in different environment. When carrying highway construction in Guizhou province, there can be a lot of bedding in gently inclined coal strata slope sliding occurred in the excavation and construction process,which cause property loss and casualties. Therefore, the study on stability of slope containing coal strata is very important.In this paper, the left side slope of G56 - K1+980 -~ - K1+830 is studied as the research object. Based on the detailed analysis of the factors in the region geology and hydrological conditions, landslide elements and influencing, the shear strength parameters of the rock are determined by the laboratory experiment and the inverse algorithm of the coal measure strata. The stability of slope under natural and rainfall conditions was analyzed by numerical simulation method (GTS MIDAS). Finally, it puts forward suggestions on the control scheme of the slope.The main research contents of this paper are as follows:(1) It is analyzed that the geological, tectonic, topographical and hydrogeological conditions in the slope area through the way of collecting data and field survey. Based on the tests, the composition of the sliding zone of carbonaceous mud rock and carbonaceous mud undisturbed rock samples are analyzed. The physical and mechanical properties of carbonaceous mudstone under different saturation time are studied.(2) Combined with the conclusion of the field investigation and indoor experiment in the slope area, the factors which influence the stability of the slope are summarized from the aspects of lithology, natural conditions and human factors. The failure mode of the slope is proposed.(3) The shear strength parameters of the sliding surface of the slope are calculated and compared with the experimental results obtained through the inverse algorithm. Then, the reason of the difference of the parameters is discussed.(4) The displacement, stress and strain of the slope under natural and rainfall conditions are analyzed by numerical simulation method. The stability of the slope is also evaluated.(5) The types and characteristics of common slope protection measures and its application are analyzed. According to the characteristics of the slope, the control measures are put forward, and the advantages and disadvantages are discussed in two directions from the active anti slide measures and the passive anti slide measures.
