Smart grid(SG) is the next-generation electric power system to improve the performance of traditional power grid. Wireless sensor network(WSNs) have been used to achieve seamless, energy efficient, reliable and low-cost remote monitoring and control in SG applications.Recently, 6LoWPAN makes it possible for IPv6 communication with low cost and low power nodes. So IP-based WSNs are thought to be of great prospect in SG. In heterogeneous WSNs, energy-efficient clustering algorithms are used to reduce the energy consumption. In this paper, we study the IPv6-based WSNs technology and clustering algorithms in smart grid.Firstly, we proposed an IP-based heterogeneous WSNs model for smart grid. In the physical layer, heterogeneous sensors with IPv6 stack and different initial energy are installed in the necessary field from generation to consumer side. In the network layer, sensor nodes use clustering routing protocol and 6LoWPAN communication technology and other necessary protocols to form a IPv6 network, and the collected data by WSN will be sent to Internet through IPv6 gateways to meet different kinds of services of the application layer. Additionally, we propose a 6LoWPAN-based monitoring system for smart park. Then, we propose an improved energy efficient distributed clustering algorithm (IEEDC) for the presented WSNs. IEEDC simplify and improve the existing DEEC-like algorithms by optimizing the estimation of average energy of network and changing the probability threshold and the cluster head selection probability. Simulation results showed that our algorithm could effectively prolong the network lifetime and transfer more messages than DEEC and EDDEEC by reducing the fluctuation of number of CHs.In addition, when we change the location of the BS or increase the differences of the initial energy of nodes, the simulations also confirm the performance supremacy of our algorithm.
