As the significant base of energy sources, the north and south poles possess own strategic importance because of their interest in military, economy and politics also.China has extremely broad marine area, in the view of varying degrees of sea ice whenever winter arrives; relative researches on icebreaker come to the strategic and economic of rank for development. However, research on the ice load is the fundamental and significant part in the icebreaker research field.Firstly, on the base of substantial articles, items of physical and mechanical property of sea ice are studied, meanwhile, the recent determination methods of ice load ,such as theoretical research, numerical simulation empirical formula and experimental, are summarized and then compared to analyze.Secondly, this paper calculate the ice load, in calculation process the theory of a semi-infinite elastic plate resting on an elastic foundation is used. Icebreaker advancing in level ice will introduce several failure processes to the ice sheet, they are the phase of ice crushing which is caused by the maximum stress in the ice sheet reaching the uniaxial compressive strength ? the phase of radial cracks formulating and the phase of circumferential cracks formulating, the cracks are caused by the maximum stress in the ice sheet reaching the flexural strength. Then using the ls-dyna software simulates the process of icebreaking. Output stress and strain diagram of typical moment and ice load time history curve. Analyze the ice load trend over time. Finally, the effects of a series of parameters such as ice thickness, ice modulus of elasticity, icebreaker speed and typical hull form on ice load are analyzed.
