Since 20 th century, the spatial theory has been attracting more and more attention from western literary and art circles, aesthetics circles, etc. While constructing the Western view of modern space,Walter Benjamin unremittingly explored the spatial aesthetics in terms of urban architecture based on his own real experiences of the changes about urban spaces. He deeply introspected the crisis of modern culture, interpersonal relationship, and the ties between ideology and constructions of urban spaces by highlighting architecture.Chapter one probes the derivation and major connotations of Benjamin's urban spatial theory, and presents the importance of spatial theory in Benjamin's philosophy. It discusses major connotations from the aspects of ideology and social culture, while display its importance via comparisons between spatial theory and his other theoretical achievements.Chapter two begins with the analysis on Benjamin's point of view about urban space in terms of crowds of people, flaneurs, and prostitutes. Then he moved on to analyze how to present real space in terms of chambers;arcades;and coffee shops. Finally ends up with analyzing how to present virtual space from the dialectic and symbolistic aspects of ruins;basement and breakfast room.Chapter three ponders over the enlightenments of Benjamin's urban spatial theory that offered us in present reality.First and foremost, the significance of how to interpret the true meaning of people's survival in metropolitan area;and then the inspiration on how to understand mass culture and contemporary artistic effects.Throughout the study on Walter Benjamin's urban special theory,on one hand, this thesis will help us to enrich our panoramic understanding about Walter Benjamin's philosophy;on the other hand,it presents more meaningful and aesthetic analyses of our living situation and multicultural space.
