Historic district is the epitome of a city. It is unique and non-renewable and recorded the most glorious moment of economy, politics and culture of the city. Dashilar Commercial Street and Qianmen Street are located in Qianmen-Dashilar Historic District. Both of them were built in the Yuan Dynasty, formed scale in Ming Dynasty, and reached their peak period in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China and gradually declined while New China was founded. They had interacted with each other, shared prosperity and development and had become the central business district of Beijing city at that time. Before the reconstruction, with the rapid commercial development, Dashilar Commercial Street was no longer as prosperous as it was in the past but it was still bustling and full of tourists. However, after the reconstruction,Qianmen Street seems bleak although it acquired a completely new outlook and changed the previous “dirty and chaotic” situation. Therefore, the author takes the phenomenon of the rising and falling of this Historical District as the entry point to research the reason and then create a summary of the landscape design methods and principles of Historical District Commercial Street. This thesis sorted out the historical development of Dashilar Commercial Street and Qianmen Street, and then compared their current situations and found out the reason that caused the rising and falling is the street scale, the architecture style, the management body, the commercial identity and the difference of citizens' culture. Because of the acquirement and loss of both locations after the reconstruction, it was summed up that the landscape design methods of Historical District Commercial Street should start from macroscopic, middle, and microcosmic three levels and gradually reconstruct. This put forward the five principles of Historical District Commercial Street landscape reconstruction. At last, by taking example of West street, the thesis integrated the design method into the design practice, explained the feasibility, and applied a brand new thinking for the landscape reconstruction of Dashilar West Street. At the same time, it also serves a good reference for both domestic and foreign historical district commercial street landscape reconstruction.
