Research On Pavement Performance Of Sulfur Asphalt Mix

Sulfur is an additive of asphalt mixture,acted not only as asphalt mixture modifying agent but also as cementing material additive,which can mainly increase pavement strength,temperature susceptibility,rutting resistance to prolong life-span.In addition,sulfur is comparatively economical than other modified techniques of base bitumen.Firstly,make investigation on composition design of sulfur asphalt mixture testing on raw materials with grading design method,researching on AC,13,AC-20 and AC-25 grading respectively by Mashall compaction tests.It is demonstrated that dosage,voidage,flow value of asphalt mixture may reduce while bulk specific gravity,saturability,VMA(Void of mineral aggregate)as well as Mashall stability may increase after adding sulfur modifier.Secondly,study on pavement performance of sulfur asphalt mixture has been made by a set of rutting test,immersion Marshall test,freezing and thawing split test,rutting test after freezing-melting circulation,immersion rutting test and mechanical test on common asphalt mix as well as sulfur asphalt mixture of different AC-13,AC-20 and AC-25 gradations.It is demonstrated that adding asphalt modifying agent can improve asphalt mixture high-temperature stability but may lower its water stability that anti-stripping agent needs to be added to improve its water stability;asphalt mix may become hard and fragile whose deforming resistance and flexibility decreases.Finally,by paving trial road,we can comprehend sulfur asphalt mix's construction technology,detect and make economic analysis.Adding sulfur modifying agent into asphalt mix can have favorable pavement performance.Sulfur can be used to replace a part of asphalt in equivoluminal proportion to lower pressure from asphalt supply in peak construction period.Besides,sulfur asphalt mix has ability to lower temperature and reduce viscosity during construction which can deduct petrol consumption along with energy conservation and emission.
