With the rapid development of civil aviation in our country, the contradiction between rapidly increased air passengers and the limited service resource of the airport becomes more and more prominent. Along with the intelligentized development of the airport and the air passengers' need of service based on location, it is important to introduce the service technology based on location in the air terminals. The key technology of the service based on location is the location technology. Along with the widespread deployment and used of wireless local network, the location technology based on WLAN gradually becomes main current of the indoor positioning technology.This paper makes deeply and systemically research on the location techniques which is based on the signal strength, and presents specific location algorithm aiming at the particularity of the air terminals. The main work and innovation points of the paper are as follows:(1) In this paper, the existing location technology based on the signal strength is divided into two categories: theoretical model and empirical model. This paper makes a primary study on their fundamentals, the advantages and disadvantages and development status of these models. Finally, it also describes the evaluation index of the positioning technology.(2) To provide location-based service(LBS) in airport terminals, a location determination technology based on the convergence method of sets as well as weighted radial basis function was introduced. This method made use of the weak signal strength of the APs,which made up for the traditional algorithm only using signal intensity of APs, at the same time it was insensitive to APs which was unexpected broken.(3) To provide location-based service in airport waiting hall, a three-dimensional location estimation method based on received signal strength and signal propagation model is proposed. Least-square approach has been applied to determine parameters of signal propagation model obtained in the first step, minimum mean squares error(MMSE) method is applied to estimate the position of target node. Compared with the two-dimensional location algorithms being widely used now, the three-dimensional location method takes into account the APs deployment highly influence on positioning, which is more suitable for this particular scene.(4) In this special application scenario of the air terminals, it implements an indoor location archetype system based on the signal strength. Firstly,the system locates using thelocation technology, which is present by this paper and based on set and the weighted radial basis function. If the client is in the waiting hall, then the system will amends the location using the three-dimensional positioning technology based on the propagation model presented.
