The purpose of this paper is to provide technical support in choosing the insulating materials for the thermal protect design of the hypersonic tunnel components. The thermal insulating properties of four materials are compared in the paper, which are the insulating material with multi-layer stainless steel, polycrystalline mullite asbestos, polycrystalline mullite-board asbestos, and polycrystalline mullite shaped asbestos. In the paper, the thermal insulating properties of the four materials are first compared on the basis of theoretical calculation according to the heat transfer theory of the high temperature air flowing in the hypersonic wing tunnel; then, their properties are compared on the basis of experimental results obtained from the experiments conducted in the FD-03 hypersonic wind tunnel through the testing devices designed for the thermal insulating materials. These results also provide theoretical support for choosing the thermal insulating material in the design of the valves with high pressure and temperature used in FD-16 wing tunnel.The results obtained in this paper can be used as reference in the design of thermal protection for the structures of the convenient hypersonic wind tunnel.
