Research Of The Festoon Column's Function Conversion From Tradition To Modern Times

As one of the most important decorative components of Chinese ancient architecture, “festoon column” has a history of hundreds of years. The festoon column was mentioned in the Yingzao Fashi early in Song Dynast, in which it was named as virtual column. Its model is deeply influenced by Chinese culture, and it has typical Chinese cultural characteristics. It was transformed from the Buddha curtain tassel originally, and derived from the Buddhist umbrella cover. Its main functions are supporting the eaves, making a performance of float feeling of building, symbolizing the space division, emphasizing on the nodes in the transition space. With the rapid development and accelerating urbanization process, a large number of Chinese ancient buildings have been replaced by cement buildings. The festoon column, as the decorative component of ancient architecture, also faces perishing. The festoon column has fallen into the dilemma of living. Bearing the Chinese people's aesthetic ideals and cultural characteristics, the exquisite carving festoon column is the fine traditional culture of Chinese nation. In the literary and art symposium, the general secretary Xi said: “we should inherit and develop the Chinese excellent traditional culture and Chinese aesthetic spirit in the new era.” Therefore, to realize the inheritance and the modern application of festoon column art, we should expand the application space and convert the function of festoon column combined with the characteristics of the modern times. And we can apply this form with Chinese cultural favor to our life. Then, the festoon column will be truly inherited. By consulting the related series of literature search, I found that there is no relevant research on festoon column's function conversation from the traditional to the modern under the platform of art design discipline.This paper mainly make an on-the-spot investigation of the festoon column stacked at antique furniture distribution market located in the town of Anren and the festoon column used in the Imperial Palace, Chinese ancient architecture museum, Beihai Park, Houhai, Nanluo Alley, Yandai Xiejie and other places. And we analyze and collate the model, color, ornamentation, material, remaining status as well as the style and application space of the festoon column in tradition and present respectively. We explored the artistic characteristics and the application status of festoon column to establish the relatively complete information system for the research of this paper. On this basis, by referring to the literatures and material information related to “the function conversation and the modern interpretation” under the platform of Art Design, we explain the significance and method of the function conversation of festoon column. Then, the author mainly analysis the function conversation of festoon column in the following aspects: the function transition of festoon column found in the field; the function transition of old stacking festoon column; the function transition of festoon column in the way of plan and stereo. The case of the function transition of festoon column the author explore includes the extraction of the pattern, the design of daily life supplies, jewelry design, cake design, doll series design and so on.By studying the function transition of the festoon column, we excavate more extensive expressions of the festoon column in modern society and realize the application and inheritance of the festoon column. Thus, the festoon column, which has last for hundreds of years and brings the taste of Chinese culture, maybe able to continue to accompany us in life. Meanwhile, the exploration of the festoon column from the tradition to the modern times can also provide a reference for the inheritance of other Chinese excellent traditional culture at the present society.
