Explain Tradition With Modern Language

Chinese architect IM Pei was hailed as the last modernist architect in the 20th centry, he is an architect who focus on practical abstract form, and designed a large number of epoch-making building. His works integrate and refine the Chinese traditional culture and ideal, he shows us a new look of Chinese local style through an abstract architectural language, his ideology will greatly affect the development of modern Chinese architecture. This article is divided into five parts, in the first part, the effect of traditional culture to the modern architectural design and the relationship between the culture and design are summarized and analyzed, plus the cultural element of architecture and the relationship between traditional culture and modern architecture. Push traditional culture and modern art and design closer, grasp the practical significance of Chinese traditional architectural culture and modern design more accurately. The second part describes the creative thinking and background, and take one of his works-Su Zhou Museum for example to analyze, so that we can easily understand Mr. Pei's architectural ideology. The third part, it analyzes the specialty of traditional Chinese space, ideological content, as well as the aspects of space of philosophy, along with the space and characteristic of the new part of Su Zhou Museum, it analyzes these with a contrast way, so that we can feel the traditional Chinese space spirit in the new building. The forth part gives us a good view of the extension of the traditional garden ideology in the modern buildings by comparing the features and thoughts of traditional Chinese garden with the specialty of the garden of the new Museum. In the fifth part, it analyzes Mr. Pei's architectural ideology and the space of museum by study his special ability of creating space with lights.This thesis is combined with the five parts above, and it researches the positive effect of the specific construction practice of Su Zhou Museum, in order to the value of the traditional Chinese architectural culture, ideology to the Chinese contemporary architectural design. Finally, it makes several advices of how can we do good Chinese architectural design, it points out that seizing the Chinese spirit, using modern technology to express the Chinese historical spirit, is the basis of Chinese Architectural design.
