Gansu provinces is one of China's major desert distribution. With the promotion of the implementation of the western development policy, the future will have more roads, including highways across the province, desert areas, but at present the province has not yet set design experience. In order to ensure safe and smooth highway, sand for road hazards must be minimized. The institute relies project in Gansu Province is the first sand area expressway. Through the full range of complex and meticulous investigation sandy terrain, access to relevant reference materials and scientific research, through computational analysis and scheme comparison, sandy roadbed of highway protective measures studied, using the analogy and the observed effects during construction to verify the feasibility of the program, and thus improve the design and construction.The main research contents of this study is divided into two areas according to sand damage to roadbed hazards. First, reduce the subgrade's wind erosion protection measures based, research such as prevention of erosion and embankment hollowed take protective measures, such as roadbed filling height, embankment fill, slope protection measures and the application of geotextile material and the like. Second, reduce research sandstorm caused by roadbed subgrade sand dunes sink and buried and take protective measures. Such as the cross section of roadbed choose to establish other projects and Sediment Control System.Field investigation and data collection were processed to analyze the influence of climate. The sand wind characters of the research area were required by calculating and analyzing the parameters, mainly about the critical threshold velocity, sediment load, the dominant wind dir ection, sand source distribution, and so forth. The causes and influence parameters of roadbed damage were analyzed during roadbed stability study, the study also refered the sand wind co ndition of old road and construction condition of engineering to determine the form of cross s ection. Appropriate of embankment slope and engineering protection system of different stren gth of sand wind was proposed to complete the research, the results can be used to build a dat a base of expressway roadbed protection according with the practical sand wind area in Gansu province.
