Study On Contemporary Portable Mobile Architecture Design Strategies

With the development of building industrialization, building construction is gradually separated from site. Building products are manufactured in factories like cars and computers and tend to be integrated, intelligent and ecological. New materials and technologies change the relationship between architecture and the earth thoroughly and lead to the invention of portable architecture which touch the earth lightly. As portable architecture is a new topic in China, the existing portable building products are lack of innovation. There is a demand for design and construction experience from foreign architects and manufacturers.Based on investigation of 52 contemporary portable buildings, portable architecture design strategies are summarized to provide new ideas for designers in related fields. The research starts from the definition and classification of mobile architecture which include portable architecture as one type. Secondly, the history, current situation and prospection of portable architecture is discussed. Portable architecture proves to be feasible in design and construction. Finally, comparison and analysis of contemporary specific case reveals the design methods of portable architecture. The design strategies are discussed in two aspects, space and structure. According to scale, space strategies is explained from three levels, group combination, unit space and variable interface and aim to achieve the efficiency of space. Lightness is the common characteristic of light wood structure, light steel structure and containers which are applied in portable buildings. Efficient space and light structure ultimately aim to achieve the mobility of architecture.
