Projector-type headlamps have gained substantial popularity in the realm of headlamp design during the past decades because of their small size, far projection distance and excellent ability to create a sharp cut-off line. The research of this paper is aimed at improving the performance of the projector-type headlamps. In this paper, we discuss the principle and advantages of the projector-type headlamps, then improve the performance of these with halogen bulb by redesigning projection lenses. For the problem of the color aberration near the cut-off line, we introduce a new asymmetrical surface into the design of projection lens with the help of software Zemax, which can suppress the color aberration while retaining a sharp cut-off line. For the problem of overlarge gradient of illuminance near the cut-off line, we introduce a lens with microstructures into the system for uniforming the light and decreasing the gratitude. The results of samples manufactured under the designs above are corresponding to the simulation, which indicates these designs can improve the performance of projector-type headlamps obviously.Furthermore, with the advantages of lower energy consumption, longer life time, faster start-up time and so on, LED has become the suitable light source for automobile headlamps and has the potential to be widely utilized in the near future. Thus, based on the projector-type headlamp mentioned above, a design of low-beam headlamp system with LED source is proposed and developed in this paper. The results of simulation and experiment both meet requirements of the ECE R112 regulation.
